To inspire kids to lead healthy and active lifestyles!
Go outside! Run on a playground, ride a bike, grab a racket, and ‘shake your bones’ to feel healthy and active. This is the lifestyle we inspire our community’s kids to live. In Austin ISD, the percentage of overweight and obese students varies widely by school, from from 23.5% to 53.5% according to a 2010 Children’s Optimal Health report. Additionally, obesity rates are disproportionate by race, as African American and Latino rates of obesity are twice as high as other racial groups. Boneshaker Project works directly in the community to reverse these trends by empowering kids to feel physically strong from a young age. Through unique programs and expert coach mentorship, we encourage kids to ‘do what moves you,’ feel confident, and enjoy healthy lifestyles.
Our overarching mission is to inspire kids to find activities that inspire them to be active for a lifetime, but our grassroots programs include running, biking and now surf programs. Through fun outdoor activities we create “exercise in disguise” and shape a new generation of Boneshakers.
Born To Run
We partner with Elementary Schools to train onsite coaches who are currently on staff at the school to use the Born To Run methodology to teach kids how to run, similar to learning to Ride Bike or swim. Our school districts this fall are Manor and Del Valle. We train the kids twice a week and teach them how to run the 100, 400 and Mile (1-4-1). We provide each young athlete with their own Born To Run Shirt. We then take them to the Trail of Lights Fun Run at the end of the first semester and the Sunshine Run at the end of the second. The cost is $10 per semester. We fun the program through the support of our donors and the school district.
