Mission

To inspire kids to lead healthy and active lifestyles!

About Us

Go outside! Run on a playground, ride a bike, grab a racket, and ‘shake your bones’ to feel healthy and active. This is the lifestyle we inspire our community’s kids to live. In Austin ISD, the percentage of overweight and obese students varies widely by school, from from 23.5% to 53.5% according to a 2010 Children’s Optimal Health report. Additionally, obesity rates are disproportionate by race, as African American and Latino rates of obesity are twice as high as other racial groups. Boneshaker Project works directly in the community to reverse these trends by empowering kids to feel physically strong from a young age. Through unique programs and expert coach mentorship, we encourage kids to ‘do what moves you,’ feel confident, and enjoy healthy lifestyles.

BONESHAKER’S PROGRAM IMPACT

For four years we’ve provided fun, active programs for local Austin kids, free or low cost, in schools, parks and communities in Central Texas. Click here for a snapshot of where we’ve impacted students and brought healthier lifestyles.

Our Programs

Our overarching mission is to inspire kids to find activities that inspire them to be active for a lifetime, but our grassroots programs include running, biking and now surf programs. Through fun outdoor activities we create “exercise in disguise” and shape a new generation of Boneshakers.

Programs in Parks

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe CDC notes the importance of extracurricular activity outside of school, and in partnership with City of Austin’s Parks & Recreation Department we work to provide a no-cost solution for kids. We currently offer programs at Dittmar Recration and South Austin Rec. Center. We’ve also partnered with Dove Springs, Rosewood, Gus Garcia, and other local parks. A typical day at the programs includes snacks from healthy bar partner, Bearded Brothers, followed by a bike equipment and safety lesson. Then, kids hop on bikes from our mobile fleet and explore their parks, neighborhoods and even go on field trips. Click here to learn more.

Run Clubs

The Boneshaker Run Clubs are afterschool programs on campus in Central Texas schools. Branded as the school’s unique run club, and lead by a campus teacher, the clubs employ the proven “Born to Run” Curriculum. They drive the convergence of athletics, socialization, leadership, adventure, fitness, endurance and the great outdoors. The program inspires youth to become passionate about living life through motion with their peers. We move kids from spectators to participants, and build a network of inspired young athletes. Currently in 12 schools in Round Rock and Austin ISD, including 4 Title 1 Schools all of which have students on full scholarship.

Summer Camp at NLand Surf Park

In Summer 2017 Boneshaker Project partnered with NLand  Surf Park to bring the first annual active, multi-sport Summer Camp to youth in Texas. Kids ages 8-14 (aka “Waveshakers”) learned to surf at a world class facility and enjoyed bike riding, fitness activities, Xtreme sports, yoga, and much more! . Five full-day sessions in June, July, and August coming back in 2018!

Family-Focused Events

Kids to Parks Day

Family-focused Boneshaker Events provide free fun for the entire family while sharing the joy of exercise and healthy living. Events have included school family bike nights, Saturday family bike rides, community family nights at a cycling racetrack, and family afternoon fun at Whole Foods Markets. Events present exposure opportunities for community partners and sponsors such as Bearded Brothers, Jaime’s Salsa, Austin Parks Foundation, and more.
